Past Event: Human Chess Spring 2009

1 PM, 28 March 2009 | Perelman Quadrangle

It’s Philo Human Chess! To help make this event as fun and entertaining as possible, please consider the following:

1) You are strongly encouraged to bring your own costumes, weapons, and affects! “Costume” is a loose term– anything you can do to look even a little more chess-piece-like qualifies. We will provide a bunch of plastic and cardboard swords and shields and some other things, but due to a very limited budget, we will not have enough stuff to fully dress or arm most pieces. Therefore, while you should definitely still come if you can’t bring your own things, you will be most prepared if you also bring your own affects.

2) Unlike most chess games, these games will be much more about the pieces than the players. Pieces should always be taunting each other, taunting the opposing player, shouting insults, brandishing weapons, etc. Actual confrontations between pieces should be dramatic (though the rules of chess dictate a pre-determined winner, of course). I’m told some participants are preparing lists of Shakespearean insults to shout across the board– this kind of preparation is highly encouraged. Also, the games will move more quickly than usual chess games so the pieces stay entertained. That said, players should absolutely play to win!

3) We already have a bunch of materials, but any donations would be much appreciated and would allow us to make more stuff and thereby improve the overall experience. Any plastic weapons, costume parts (loose term!), artistic materials, etc. would greatly help.

Presented by the great and glorious Dictaphones and Leather Bags Committee.
