Take a break from your hectic scholastic adventures and come to the last Philo meeting of the semester! Triple the gentle madness will be had as we welcome both a delegation from the Philolexian Society, our Columbia University sister society, and a horde of raucous and racy Senior Members. The Lit-Ex will be given by Mr. Jeremy Berman on the topic of Quadscience:
If you have ever had a group of friends that consists of four people, you have been a part of a quad. Quadscience is a revolutionary method which can be used to evaluate these quads and determine their structure and stability. You can even evaluate trios, quints, and sexts (but not the naughty kind). Find out why you don’t talk to that guy from high school anymore. Find out why the Beatles broke up. Find out why Kim Jong Un is probably screwing North Korea over. Find out your destiny!

Come for the comestibles, stay because you just can’t tear yourself away.

Please join the Philomathean Society for the next lecture of the 2012-2013 Lindback Lecture Series! In the past, it was tradition that an invitation to lecture at the Philomathean Society was extended in conjunction with the Lindback Award, one of the greatest distinctions for faculty members from across the University. However, for reasons not entirely known, the series has not taken place during recent years. Having once been a smash hit amongst members of the Society and greater Penn community, we are excited to formally reinstate the tradition during the Spring of 2013.

This lecture will feature a talk by Dr. Larry Silver on “Bruegel’s Biblical Kings”. Pieter Bruegel the Elder is celebrated for his paintings of Flemish peasants at labor and leisure. But he also produced innovative biblical pictures that also engage with contemporary issues of both politics and religion. On the eve of the Dutch Revolt against the Catholic King of Spain, Bruegel’s biblical images of kingship cast power and pride in a harsh light.

The literary exercise, “Faeries, Faggots, and Philosophy” will be delivered by Mr. Andrew Jakubowski. His presentation will delve into the history and evolution of the Radical Faeries and two pertinent philosophies: Gay Consciousness and subject-SUBJECT Consciousness. It will consider how these philosophies manifest themselves at the individual, interpersonal, and societal levels, incorporating a healthy bit of queer and feminist theories as well as some plain old fun.
